JERSEY CITY, N.J. | (NJCU) has introduced a new Minor in Finance this semester, offering two distinct academic tracks designed to serve both business majors and students from other disciplines seeking to build financial expertise and enhance their career prospects.
The program recognizes finance as both a vital component of business operations and an essential life skill, providing students with coursework in business finance, financial markets, and investments. The dual-track approach ensures that students across all academic backgrounds can access relevant financial education tailored to their career goals and academic preparation.
"Financial literacy and expertise are increasingly critical in today's economy, regardless of one's chosen field," said Finance Department Co-Chair Dr. Zhimin Wang. "This minor provides students with practical skills that will serve them throughout their careers, whether they're working with financial departments in their organizations or making informed personal financial decisions."
The finance minor builds on three courses required of all business majors and consists of four additional finance courses and one elective, for a total of 15 credits. Students will complete coursework in Investment Principles for Financial Planning, International Finance, Portfolio Analysis, and Capital Markets & Financial Institutions, along with their choice from 13 elective options.
"The introduction of our Finance Minor demonstrates how we can deliver practical, career-relevant education that serves students across all disciplines,鈥 said Interim Provost Donna L. Adair, Ph.D. 鈥淲hether our graduates pursue careers in healthcare, technology, education, or business, they will be better equipped to navigate the financial complexities of their professional and personal lives."
For non-business majors, the program emphasizes foundational financial literacy and management skills that complement primary areas of study such as mathematics, computer science, or liberal arts disciplines. This track includes unique offerings such as Financial Literacy: Strategies for Financial Success 鈥 which fulfills general education requirements while building practical money management skills 鈥 and courses such as Managerial Finance, Investment Principles for Financial Planning, and Capital Markets & Financial Institutions. An additional three credits from among 13 elective options are also required.
Students can declare the minor through their GothicNet account with assistance from their academic advisors. The program is immediately available to students.
The Minor in Finance represents NJCU's continued commitment to providing career-relevant education that prepares students for success in an evolving job market. By completing the program, students gain competitive advantages in the job market while developing skills that support long-term personal and professional financial success.
