In the Creative Writing concentration, you'll engage at every level of the creative process, from cultivating ideas and writing drafts to publication and performance. You'll begin with core English courses that hone your reading and writing skills and explore intellectual and cultural issues in classic and contemporary literature from the U.S. and elsewhere. Then, in three creative writing workshops and three craft seminars, you'll learn to create original work in the genre(s) of your choice: poetry, memoir, fiction, playwriting, or creative nonfiction. In English 412, the Capstone Seminar, you'll explore the challenges of writing a publishable creative manuscript. You'll also benefit from regular events featuring professional writers, including English program alumni, and the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of our students who have had career-boosting internships at publishers in NJ and NY.

This degree is a great first step for a career in writing or editing, or working for an organization (in government, business, or the non-profit sector) that needs writerly skills. Continued study may include a master’s degree in creative writing (an MFA), or a master’s and doctorate in English, Communications, Law, or other fields.
